Deegan Family

UPDATE ON  FAMILY HISTORY... John and Anne Deegan arrived in Sydney (1841) on the "Marquis of Hastings" from Portsmith, UK, as immigrants from Borrisocane, Tipperary, (Married 1839) Ireland.  Records show they lived in Pitt Street, Sydney.  His occupation was noted as a gold prospector.

This tombstone is of Thomas, their son. Husband of Alice.  It shows he died in 1910.  ( The year my father was born at Mt. Kembla, NSW).   He died in Wollongong Hospital.  Result of a horse riding accident.  He too was a gold prospector.  He had nuggets of gold on his person, at the time of the accident from his diggings at Oberon, NSW.  Family members were given these gold samples.  The headstone is in the Wollongong  Cemetry.  (Opposite Stonemason office).

The late Rex Connor (Minister for Mines and Energy, Whitlam Gov. ) wanted to look further into the actual gold find at Oberon.  There was a map, called "Dad's Millions". The family members were not interested. I do not know the whereabouts of the map to this day. His son, Rex in Wollongong may have an idea.  I visited the Church in which they were married in Borrisocane, on a trip in 2007.  Lost the thread of the family.  could have been looking in the wrong town.
